Daughters of Darkness (1971) Review

These are the Daughters of Darkness... They are waiting for you - They thrive on BLOOD

Daughters of Darkness
This is a bit of a strange one though I must admit, I like it. The strange part about Daughters of Darkness (not to be confused with Tom Selleck's Filipino witch hunt, Daughters of Satan) is that not much happens yet I found myself mesmerized by the film, and especially by Delphine Seyrig who plays the Countess Bathory.  There's just something about her sultry eloquence that makes it so I could listen to her all day.  And one does get to listen to her a great deal because there's a lot more dialogue than there is action in this film.  Daughters of Darkness also has a bit of a Hitchcock feel to it.  I'm not saying this film is on the same level as any of Hitchcock's, merely that it too has a similar dialogue-driven suspense element.  I wish Hitchcock had directed a lesbian vampire movie, though.  Imagine Jimmy Stewart stammer his way through that.

While on their honeymoon, a pair of newlyweds find themselves stranded at a Belgian hotel where there are only three others in the whole building.  One is the hotel manager and the other is an elegant Hungarian Countess (Seyrig).  Oh, and the Countess's pouty and curvaceous servant/slave girl is also there.  The Countess tells the couple tales of the Countess Bathory, an evil woman who drank and bathed in the blood of virgin girls to retain her youth until she was imprisoned in her own castle by the angry townsfolk hundreds of years ago.  The hotel manager was a young bellhop when this Hungarian Countess originally came to stay at the hotel and she hasn't aged a day in forty years.  Could this Countess staying at the hotel be the same Countess Bathory that murdered virgin slave girls to attain immortality centuries ago?  Yes.  Yes she is.

Anyway, this seductive Countess tries to lure the young couple into her bloody and decadent lifestyle, they resist, there's some hot vampire action, and yada yada, things don't end well.

I do give Daughters of Darkness a thumbs up.  It is slow - some will find it painfully so - but it's also a stylish, mesmerizing and unsettling film that's worth checking out, especially if you like lesbian vampires or deserted Flemish hotels.  Hell, just watch it for Delphine Seyrig's performance.
