Two Hundred Maniacs!

Somehow I managed to dupe 200 of you into following my blog.  Thanks guys for all your support!  I really do appreciate it.  I'm glad to see some people still enjoy the grindhouse era of cinema.

...But not everybody.  I recently came across a quote over at slashfilm.com from Lost's Naveen Andrews.  Apparently he was unfamiliar with the grindhouse genre so Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez wanted to give him a crash course in the subject before he was to play Abby in Planet Terror.  They sat him down for a grindhouse movie marathon and this is what he had to say about the films:
“They were interminable and they were terrible. I thought they were horrible films, dismal. And the actors seemed to be suffering in them and you just felt sorry for everyone. And I’d look around and I’d see Quentin and Robert laughing like maniacs. I found it funny for about two minutes. I was embarrassed, I was like – what am I not getting here? They obviously see some kind of esthetic here but I can’t see it. I’m still at a loss of what the esthetic actually is. I think it has something to do with an obscene type of humor. “
This seems to be a common reaction and it puts a smile on my face.  So what do you guys really think of grindhouse movies?  Are they dismal, horrible films or underappreciated classics?  What's your opinion?

Well I haven't seen many of them, so I'm not sure I should give an opinion yet. I've heard of Planet Terror, but haven't seen it yet.
Congrats on 200!

Some of them are, some of them are not, it can depend on your humour at the time aswell, sometimes its a bit of legimate nudity and violence.

I think that guy has the right to think what he wants, but I personally think they are original and hilarious :D

Yeah, it depends on the mood for me. But if I'm in the mood, they're just amazing to watch. Else I get the same reaction, it's like I'm missing something.

I think 200 followers is just the start for you my friend. You cover a fascinating subject with a lot of expertise. I myself have watched three of your most recent recommendations and had a hoot!

As far as the grindhouse genre, for me it represents a time when people enjoyed the drive-in movie theater. I am old enough to remember some of these movies being in the drive-in when I was a kid.

We would all pile into the car with barbecue grills and coolers full of refreshment and have a damn good time.

Then later on in life when I started college MST3K became popular and brought back a lot of these movies too. I truly think that they are underrated classics. Sure they are pulp, but I would put them against three quarters of the movies that are released nowadays...

Some are gems and some are trash but it's its own category of film for a reason. Perhaps an acquired taste.

And congrats on 200! Here's to another 200. Cheers!

I used to watch a lot of grindhouse in highschool. Now I don't have the patients to sit through a movie. It's like latent ADD

Haven't heard of this one!

200 maniacs sounds like a good Grindhouse premise, did you post at crazy 88's? lol

I like that quote, I love the purity of grindhouse. It drops all the Hollywood sheen and doesn't care if anybody likes it or not.

My favorite quote is on gaming and makes me smile whenever I hear it:

“For years, I've lived a double life. In the day, I do my job - I ride the bus, roll up my sleeves with the hoi-polloi. But at night, I live a life of exhilaration, of missed heartbeats and adrenalin. And, if the truth be known a life of dubious virtue I won't deny it - I've been engaged in violence, even indulged in it. I've maimed and killed adversaries, and not merely in self-defense. I've exhibited disregard for life, limb and property and savored every moment. You may not think it to look of me but I have commanded armies and conquered worlds, though in achieving these things I've set morality aside. I have no regrets, for though I've led a double life, at least I can say – I have lived.”

I've only got around to watching a couple of them but I've gotta say, those old cracked out directors that brought those stories to life were experts and deserve a knighting.
