His Game is Winning. Her Game is Men.
With these stupid taglines and that ridiculous poster, I expected Cockfighter to be another campy hixploitation movie. I guess I thought it would be something like The Dukes of Hazzard with boobies and rooster fights but I was mistaken. Instead, Cockfighter is an excellent film. Sure, it has its moments of silliness but overall it's a serious character study of a man who is obsessed with winning at any cost, it's just that this man is obsessed with winning the title of "Cockfighter of the Year."
Even though he speaks few words throughout the film, Warren Oates gives an outstanding performance as the a likable yet emotionally detached southerner who cares about little but that cockfighting medal. You see, he stopped talking after his big mouth cost him the title one year. Possessions are gambled away, family members are put out on the street and women (including the lovely Patricia Pearcy) are tossed aside as he maintains his narrow focus. The only thing that matters to this man is that cockfighting title.
I was really surprised by this film. Cockfighter is legitimately good, not just good for a grindhouse film. I can't recommend it enough.
